Muskegon County Museum Historical Sites
In the years since the doors of the Lakeshore Museum Center (formerly the Muskegon County Museum) opened in 1938, the institution has amassed a collection of between 80,000 and 100,000 artifacts. Nearly 99% of the items in the museum’s collection was donated to help preserve the history of the community and includes artifacts from the Occidental Hotel, lumbering and farming tools, office machinery produced and used in Muskegon County, toys, clothing, furniture, and much more. When exhibit topics are chosen for display in the museum, artifacts relating to that topic are selected from our vast collection to help tell the story.
Some artifacts may not make it into an exhibit for some time. This may be because they are too delicate to display or because they have not been chosen for an exhibit. These items are still important to preserve for research, education, and future exhibits. Items in storage are usually only seen by museum staff and volunteers. To show the public a wider sampling of the museum’s three dimensional artifacts, we invited community members and museum staff to tour the Collections Center, our main storage facility, to choose one artifact. The exhibit You Should See This displays the artifacts that they chose.
